“It´s not just going to be about food though, is it?”
I scratched my beard, stirred silent vortices in my iced coffee, and thought about another way to say it should mostly be about food.
“You remember why we called this blog Prawns for Breakfast?”
“Of course I do”, Clare countered affectionately, squinting at me in a manner intended to convey that I had missed the point again. “I took you to the Modern Pantry in Clerkenwell for a surprise breakfast on your birthday – and prawns are what you chose.”
“Exactly! Which is where and when I decided that this was going to be a food blog. Mostly a food blog.”
“But you can’t just spend every day writing about the last thing on your plate. And, I don´t even like prawns!”
The setting sun played gently at the edges of fluffed up clouds over Venice Beach. A couple of surf dudes buzzed incongrously past us on Segways.
“That’s a fair point”, I aquiesced sagely, and took a confused sip of coffee. “But, then what is it about?”
“Jovian, look at what’s happened since you first talked about this. We quit our jobs, rented out our flat in London, and bought a one-way flight to LA. We´re about to travel tens of thousands of miles overland to the furthest reaches of Patagonia, and then – who knows? Let’s make this blog the story of that journey. Food is part of the journey but there’s more to life than breakfast…and definitely more to life than prawns!”
More to life than prawns? I thought. She doesn’t know what she’s getting herself into.
